Immigration Issues

Immigration Issues:

So, I was asked about the Libertarian Party Platform and specifically how it relates to some of the issues that are pertinent to this current election cycle. Below I will do my best to answer these. Of course, my answers will come from my interpretation of our Platform, so some people may differ with my opinions.

1) Immigration:
I am not an Open Borders Libertarian. I think people who want to come to these United States should have the opportunity to seek citizenship and share in all that America has to  offer. This is not to say everyone, all the time, any way they want, however. Below I have outlined our party platform and my personal libertarian philosophy on these issues.

a) Legal and Illegal Immigration.
Party Position: Economic freedom demands the unrestricted movement of human as well as financial capital across national borders. However, we support control over the entry into our country of foreign nationals who pose a credible threat to security, health or property.

My take: What constitutes a threat to Security, Health or Property.

Easy one first, Security.
This is not so much about what crosses our borders or even who crosses our borders, but he intent of those who cross our borders. It is appropriate for the federal government monitor the ingress of individuals across our borders.

Party Position: We believe that respect for individual rights is the essential precondition for a free and prosperous world, that force and fraud must be banished from human relationships, and that only through freedom can peace and prosperity be realized.

Those who are not willing to submit to scrutiny upon entering these United States, do not have the best interests of the individuals that reside here at heart and are putting their interest above them. Remember a key tenant of libertarianism is reciprocal respect.

Party Position: We hold that all individuals have the right to exercise sole dominion over their own lives, and have the right to live in whatever manner they choose, so long as they do not forcibly interfere with the equal right of others to live in whatever manner they choose.

Recognizing that the fraudulent entry into this country and continued fraudulent behavior of illegals violates the rights of other citizens who, through their representatives, may choose to accept or reject candidates for citizenship, I do not support funding any support for illegals.

Party Position: Individuals should be free to make choices for themselves and must accept responsibility for the consequences of the choices they make.

Regardless of one’s agreement or disagreement with the Immigration Law, the freedom to choose whether to stay or leave, is entirely a choice made by all who live here. If one chooses to stay, while in violation of the law, they must accept the consequence of their action, which could include incarceration or deportation.
